Halcyon days.  Where are they now? Once again kindly leased to us by the Dover Harbour Board, The Southern Breakwater in only accessible by boat and provides 213 excellent fishing spaces, both inside and outside of the Harbour.  If you fancy a different venue to fish, why not give it a try.  Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (subject to weather conditions), with boats leaving the 'Dumphead' Pontoon near the Marina, at 8am and returning at 3:30pm sharp.  Anyone can go, but remember you must be 18 years old, or over 16 if accompanied by an Adult.  Tommy, the Pier Patrolman, runs a small tuck shop in the Canteen at the Eastern end for crisps, confectionary, cans of drink, coffee, tea, etc.  Angling Clubs may book the Breakwater on other days, evenings, or nights by prior arrangement.  Sufficient notice must be given and appropriate funds to cover the official DSAA Patrolman.  There is a minimum fee of £100 per party or £10 per head if more than 10 in the group.  For more information, ring the Clubhouse on +44 (0)1304 204722 or Allan Edgington on +44 (0)1304 822864.

The Storms of 1999

Damage to the Breakwater - railings on the inside almost flattened for the whole length of the Pier  

 

From this picture you can see why the Breakwater had to be closed following the persistent Storms of Christmas 1999.  Although damage was not as bad as after the Hurricane of 1987, largely due to the fact that the seas were so rough the waves broke over the Breakwater, as opposed to on it, the inside railings were still bent towards the shore by the sheer pressure of the water.
